Edward L. Hamilton

Edward L. Hamilton passed away in Newport, Washington on April 15 at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty to family and commitment to community. Known as 'Hambone,” “Steelhead Ed,” “Spaghetti Eddie,” or simply “Ed,” he was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend to many.
Born in Pocatello, Idaho on January 5, 1941 to Margaret Frances Falter Hamilton and Merlin Arthur Hamilton, Ed spent his early years in Mojave, California, attending Mojave High School before joining the U.S. Navy. In the early 1970s, he made his home in the Newport area, planting his roots on Deer Valley Road—a place his family still considers home.
Ed was a man of many passions and lived life to its fullest.
He was an avid fisherman and a dog sledder. He played the fiddle with his whole heart. He spent over five decades as a welder and pipefitter in the Plumbers & Steamfitters UA Local 44 Union. He was also engaged in local politics as an active member of the Pend Oreille County Democrats. Two of his favorite topics of conversation were the work he did on the Joe Pakootas campaign and sailing with friends to Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand. But his proudest moments weren’t defined by his own accomplishments or adventures—they were found in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were the reason for the sparkle in his eyes.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret Hamilton Schmidt (Dennis); his children, Pamela Hawker (Ben), Shawn Hamilton (Connie), Michelle Hamilton, Eddie Hamilton (Margene), Lisa Logan (Lee), Heath Wilson (Amy), and Tell Hamilton (Debra); and a large and loving extended family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were like family to him. His brotherhood of friends stayed by his side until the end. Ed was also grateful to reconnect later in life with his two older sons, Walter and Jim Nething.
Ed’s memory lives on in the stories, music, and laughter he shared. A celebration of his life and potluck will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 7th at 6972 Deer Valley Road. Please bring chairs.
Ed’s family extends deep gratitude to the staff at Newport Hospital and Health Services for the great care they provided.
