William 'Bill' Santford Gray

William 'Bill' Santford Gray

NEWPORT

William “Bill” Santford Gray, 80, of Newport, Washington, passed away peacefully on September 15, 202 5, after a courageous battle with cancer. A lifelong resident of northeastern Washington, Bill was born on June 21,1945, in Elk, to Harry Santford and Norma Elsa Gray.

Bill spent his early years working on the family homestead, tending cattle, haying, and combining — a foundation that shaped his strong work ethic and love for the land. Alongside his brother Art, he later owned and operated a successful logging company, earning a reputation as a highly, multi-skilled logger; ending his career as a sought-after faller-buncher. Even after retirement, job offers continued to come his way, a testament to his talent and dedication.

Beyond his career, Bill served his community with pride as a volunteer firefighter and was a devoted member of the Grange for over fifty years. In addition to volunteering with the local fire department, he also fought multiple wildfires in the area - risking his own life to save homes and lives of friends and neighbors. His generosity knew few bounds, and he quietly participated in local “Secret Santa” efforts to support families in need.

Bill’s life was rich with passions and creativity. He loved gold panning, hunting elk, and traveling the Northwest with his beloved wife, Clarene “Kay” Gray, whom he cared for faithfully until her passing in 2019. In his shop, Bill welded whimsical yard ornaments and refurbished antique farm and logging equipment, often turning his handiwork into treasured gifts.

Known for his humor, warmth, and steadfast friendship, Bill was always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh. He will be deeply missed by his children — Matthew Gray, Daniel Bailey, and Denise Pooler — and by countless friends who were blessed by his kindness.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held Monday, Oct. 13, at 3 p.m. at Audrey’s Restaurant in Newport, officiated by Chaplain Michelle Barnett. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tunnels2Towers, a charity close to Bill’s heart.
