Kathy Hastings

Kathy Hastings

MAY 2,1950 - OCTOBER 7, 2025 On October 7, 2025, Kathy Hastings passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Kathy was born in Newport, Washington on May 2, 1950, to Waldo and Pearl Hendershott. She was brought home to the family farm in Usk, Washington, where she grew up alongside her siblings and graduated from Cusick High School in 1968.

Over the years, Kathy held many roles — each one reflecting her strong work ethic and dedication. She could be found reading electric meters for the PUD, handling title work after car or home sales, or caring for the infirm in their homes. Whatever the season of life, she was always working on something.

She was also a passionate farmer and rancher, operating the Carousel Ranch in Pend Oreille County with her beloved husband of 2 5 years, Loyd Hastings. Together, they raised and boarded horses and harvested hay, building a life rooted in hard work and love for the land. One of her greatest passions was supporting the Equestrian Special Olympics. She proudly hosted training sessions at the ranch, sharing her knowledge and love of horses with athletes of all abilities.

Kathy and Loyd shared a love of travel, spending winters snowbirding in Arizona with friends and making regular trips to Mexico. They also enjoyed the occasional cruise, always seeking new adventures together.

In retirement, Kathy found her true calling in volunteering at Cusick School.

Known affectionately as “Grandma” to all the students, she brought joy, comfort, and unconditional love to every child who crossed her path. The students were her inspiration, and she was theirs.

She was also a cherished presence at the Legion, where her absence will be deeply felt. Bingo nights won't be the same without her laughter, and the Legion Auxiliary is now missing one very special volunteer.

Kathy was preceded in death by her husband Loyd Hastings, her parents Waldo and Pearl Hendershott, and her brother Robert Hendershott.

She is survived by her brother Tom Hendershott of Cusick, sister Sandi Kaler of Usk, daughters Cheryl Sample-Reese and husband Gary of Cusick, and Becky Walrath and husband Ray of Usk. Her grandchildren: Briana Nenema-Ward and husband Jimmy of Cusick, Ryan Sample of Spokane, Jaxson Walrath and wife Cassie of Vancouver, Andrew Walrath of Philadelphia, Christopher McCoy and wife Monique of Deer Park, K’leigh Trickier and husband JD of Tulare, CA, Madison McCoy of Spokane, Sophie McCoy and Talon McCoy of Deer Park.

She also leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren, cousins, extended family, friends, and countless others who knew her simply and lovingly as “Grandma.”

Please join us in celebrating Kathy’s life on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Usk Community Hall, 2442 Black Rd, Usk, WA 99119. A potluck will follow the service — all are welcome.
