Dewain Lewis Richter passed away on May 17, 2026 in Spokane, Washington, at the age of 83 from heart disease.

Dewain Richter was born on July 28, 1942, in Spokane, to Albert and Irene (Hoover) Richter. He graduated from West Valley High School in 1960 before attending Washington State University, where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees in music and music education in 1966. He later received a Master of Arts in musicology from Michigan State University in 1968 and met his wife Gloria Mooi. The two married July 27,1968 in Coldwater, Michigan then moved to Iowa so that Dewain could continue his graduate studies at University of Iowa. After school, Dewain and Gloria moved to Spokane and started a family.

Beginning in 1973, Dewain transitioned into the construction industry, where he built a successful career as an entrepreneur and business owner. Over the years, this enabled him to support both his family and his community. In 2009, Dewain and Gloria built their dream home on Diamond Lake. The couple was blessed with 50 years together until she passed away from cancer in 2019.

Dewain was always willing to share his advice and wisdom; those who knew Dewain remember his deep devotion to family, music, travel, and education. He opened doors for many people throughout his life and left a lasting impression on the Spokane community.

Dewain is survived by his brother Marvin Richter; his daughters Angela (Richter) Gaffney, Jennifer (Richter) Driscoll; and grandchildren Valerie, Elizabeth and Jack.

Memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of 9704 N. Division St. Spokane, WA 99218 on June 5th at 2 p.m., reception to follow.
