Guy Dale Riffel

DIAMOND LAKE

Guy Dale Riffel was born in 1934 in Eldorado, Kansas, to Jake and Bertha Riffel. The family relocated to Muncie, Kansas, in 1939, where Guy later graduated from Buhler High School in 1952. Following his education, Guy moved to Newtown, Connecticut, in 1953, serving for two years at Fairfield Mental Hospital as a 1-W conscientious objector.

In 1955, Guy and his wife Arlene settled in Spring Valley, Newport, alongside his parents. There, they welcomed four daughters into their family and became active members of the Spring Valley Mennonite Church. During this time, Guy worked alongside his father and brother Charles, logging the area while also raising pheasants. In January 1967, Guy moved to Diamond Lake, where he would make his home for the next 58 years.

Guy’s entrepreneurial spirit emerged in 1956 when he entered the contracting world with partners Kenny Fields and Jack Spears, a partnership that would span 25 years. In 1980, he formed a new partnership with Byron “Slim” Shultz before eventually establishing “Riffel Contractors” in 1993. After a successful career in construction, Guy retired in 2006. Music played a significant role in Guy’s life.

In 1958, he joined the barbershop group “The Pages of Harmony” in Spokane, WA, competing with them in Chicago in 1964. His melodious tenor voice was also featured in the Blanchard Barber Shop group “The Who So Evers” and the Newport ensemble “The Four Tune Hunters”.

An avid sportsman, Guy participated in baseball teams and bowling leagues.

He was a dedicated golfer at The Ranch Club and an active member of the Men’s Club at Stone Ridge.

In 1997, Guy married Connie Rodenbough Peterson. Together, they treasured their time filled with family, friendships, and adventures. Their travels took them to beloved destinations, including Mexico, the Panama Canal, but they always enjoyed their home at Diamond Lake and anywhere the sun shone brightly.

Guy is survived by his loving wife Connie; daughters Beverly Davis (Scott) of Arizona, Bonnie Jennings (Rich) of Newport, Brenda Meyer (Kevin) of Kansas, and Becky Webster (Terry) of Kansas, Traci Lofthus (James) of Idaho, Angela Hughes of Spirit Lake, Michelle Moody of Newport, and Michael Peterson of Newport; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack Riffel, grandson Zachery Riffel, and son-in-law “Buddy” Owen Moody.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 9th at Dalkena Community Church at 11AM, with Sherman-Campbell Funeral Home handling arrangements. Friends and family are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.shermancampbell. com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Dalkena
